Introducing the Research
We began this project by watching Food Inc in our Writing, Research, and Technology class, at Rowan University. This award winning documentary opened our eyes to the fact that GMOs are likely to be causing negative affects on our health.
Not only are we impacted by modern food production as consumers, but farmers suffer due to the agriculture changes during the last decade. The movie inspired our group to deeply consider the many controversies that are plaguing the American food industries.
Joel Salatin says,"I think it's one of the most important battles for consumers to fight: the right to know what's in their food, and how it was grown" (Food, Inc. 2008).
We decided to use this as home base, and worked hard to discover the affordances and constraints of organic farming versus conventional farming . On the journey of discovery, we also learned a lot about genetically modified foods, hormone/antibiotic injections, the differences between organic and natural, that organic does not always equal healthy, and that it is very important to know how to read labels.
My collaborative group also hoped to give a balanced view on the issue of scientifically modified, versus "God's food", in order to portray both sides of the picture. We intended to give our readers the opportunity to make informed decisions regarding the issue. Our research was conducted through interviews, personal experiences, and searching for resources online.
